Five registers

The novel is painted in five colours, and each has an instrument. Bring them in one at a time and listen to how they sit together. With sound off, the notes still fall as ink.

No register playing. Press 1 to 5, or choose a colour.

Where you hear them in the rooms.

The guqin plays in the archive, soft and formal. In the testimony room it keeps time low while the erhu enters for whatever the documents could not hold. On the journey the guqin stops entirely: Guanyin’s domain has pan pipes, an end-blown flute and the sea. At the mountain the guqin returns with its top string sharpened, one note at a time, each held until it fades. The Buddha’s strings appear only when he is present in the story.

At the final threshold all five play together for thirty seconds, then leave one by one, and the guqin’s unanswered question resolves to its root. The last sound is a brush being cleaned.
